The Finest Regiment in the World:
The Gordon Highlanders in the Boer War 1899 - 1902
Wednesday 1 February until Saturday 30 June 2012
110 years ago, in the searing heat and dust of Southern Africa, the British Army was engaged in a war against a well-armed, motivated and mobile guerrilla enemy. After initial bitter defeats, final victory was achieved only by changing tactics and resorting to controversial measures.
The Finest Regiment in the World: The Gordon Highlanders in the Boer War 1899 - 1902 explores the contribution that Gordon Highlanders made to this now largely forgotten conflict.
From storming enemy trenches to the Siege of Ladysmith, from Victoria Cross heroes to Mounted Infantry chasing a ghostly enemy across the veldt, The Gordon Highlanders played their part with bravery and professionalism. This earned them the unstinting praise of a young reporter called Winston Churchill, who, after witnessing them in action at the Battle of Doornkop in May 1900, exclaimed, 'There is no doubt that they are the finest Regiment in the world.'
Entry to the special exhibition is included in Museum admission.
